7. Human test: Standard Test Method for Human Repeat Insult Patch Testing(HRIPT), ASTM D6355
This test was developed in the USA and standardized by ASTM to assess the sensitizing potential of a cosmetic preparation or medical device intended to remain in contact with the body.
The test principle is the same as for animal testing:
induction: study material is applied at relatively low or non-irritating doses to the volunteer's back or arm for three weeks;
two-week latency period;
Triggering: a single application of a non-irritating dose is made for 48 hours;
skin reaction scoring: erythema and edema are examined and scored.
