1. What tests can detect sensitizing substances?

1.1 Skin sensitization

Four skin sensitization tests in animals are described, including three validated regulatory tests, and two tests in humans. These tests are based on T-cell mediation.

Tests in albino guinea pigs are carried out as follows:

• sensitization induction ;

• latency/maturation time and cell proliferation (rest 10-15 days) ;

• triggering ;

• scoring of erythema and localized edema at the site of the triggering application using the grid. Results are compared between the control and treatment groups.
