8. Photoallergy
This is a cutaneous pathological mechanism, following UV exposure, due to photochemical modifications, by UV rays, of substances absorbed locally in the skin or reaching the skin surface via circulating blood. The photo-antigen is then taken up by T lymphocytes as part of a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction.
Contact photoallergy is induced by UV-A (320∼400 nm) whatever the maximum absorption spectrum of the photoallergen.
