2. Choosing an airport site

Numerous factors play a part in the choice of a new site or the development of an existing one: runway orientation, length, near and far clearances, integration into air traffic, maximum capacity of the airport platform, etc.

2.1 Track orientation and regularity

Aircraft take-offs and landings become difficult, even dangerous, when the wind component on the ground perpendicular to the runway axis (crosswind) exceeds a critical value which is characteristic of the aircraft and depends mainly on its approach speed.

According to the aerodrome code (cf. § 3.3 article ), the permissible crosswind limit is :
