3.1 Standard provisions

Most aerodromes have a single runway capable of handling foreseeable traffic. The capacity of a single runway is already significant, and can handle traffic levels that can only be achieved at major airports.

This main runway, used for commercial aircraft traffic, may be supplemented by a secondary runway either for general aviation and light aviation, or as a back-up for runway maintenance operations or to avoid interrupting traffic in the event of an accident on the main runway.

At very large airports, it may be necessary to develop a system of several runways in order to achieve sufficient capacity.
