1. Birth and growth of road networks

The history of roads is rooted in the history of humanity. Initially local tracks, the result of the repeated passage of hunter-gatherers, with no synergy between them, nor any particular development, they gradually became "interconnected" to enable the longer-distance travel necessitated by the first exchanges between populations.

So it was very early on that traces of a true network organization appeared.

A striking example in France is the distribution network for the famous Grand Pressigny flint. This commune in Indre et Loire is characterized by the existence of large deposits of blond flint, whose appearance and texture lend themselves particularly well to the manufacture of large blades that are highly prized for the production of carved stone tools, then polished stone.
