1. Determining rolling mill motors

1.1 The need for rolling

It is generally necessary to be able to fine-tune the speed of a rolling mill over a wide range. This requirement leads to the use of drive motors that enable torque to be adjusted independently of speed:

  • in the case of reversible rolling mills, the direction of travel must be reversed for each pass, which means that at the end of a pass, the motor torque must be reversed to slow the mill down from rolling speed to zero, and then accelerated in the opposite direction, from zero to rolling speed;

  • for stands working in tandem (i.e. rolling the same product simultaneously), it is necessary to be able to precisely adjust the speed of each stand in relation to the other, according to...
