3.1 Microstrip architecture
To push the limits on the size of two-dimensional networks, one can attempt to make the bias current distribution uniform.
In microwave transmission line technology, it is well established that the lower losses of the microstrip line compared to the two-wire line are partly due to the more uniform current distribution, since ohmic losses are proportional to the square of the current density. The edge-effect is eliminated in the structure analogous to a planar capacitor, within which the electric field is nearly uniform.
