2. Starting material: wire rod

2.1 Steel grades used

As a general rule, all steels can be drawn into wire. The joint experience of steelmakers and wire-drawers has led to a search for the optimum characteristics required of the raw material to ensure its suitability for cold forming.

As mentioned above, the grades used cover the entire range of carbon steels containing from 0.03 to 0.92% carbon.

  • In this very wide range of carbon content, we will find steels in particular:

    • low-carbon, generally less than 0.1%, where strength characteristics are sought either :
