3.1 Surface preparation
Wire rod is coated with a layer of scale. This usually results from oxidation of the wire during cooling after hot rolling, but can also be caused by an intermediate heat treatment, in this case patenting. There may also be rust from atmospheric oxidation, which is more difficult to remove.

Scale is very hard and therefore abrasive for dies, and must be removed. Two methods are possible:
chemical pickling, which not only dissolves the oxide, but also removes it mechanically by releasing hydrogen from the wire surface;
