What is Kansei?
In an industrial design context, Kansei can be seen as a psychophysiological reaction that can be measured using various cognitive, physiological and behavioral approaches. The Kansei descriptor is a Japanese descriptor that encompasses the complex notions of feelings, impressions and emotions. In product design, this descriptor is used in reference to consumers' reactions to product models. The dimensions of Kansei are used implicitly by designers to create an attractive effect through the products they design, playing on color, shape and texture, as well as use, gesture and technology. Since the 1970s, Kansei engineering has proposed approaches based on cognitive measurements (by questionnaire) which initially focused on the semantic and sensory dimensions, and have recently been extended to the emotional dimension.
