Overview

ABSTRACT

A realistic configuration for converting an existing regional aircraft to hydrogen propulsion is described here. The article details the various required elements (tank, architecture, engines, etc.) based on existing technologies brought together in this context. It also specifies the numerical values and dimensional characteristics suitable for a typical mission of 1500 km/50 PAX. Thus, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate the current technical feasibility of a fully decarbonized short-range commercial aircraft, and to open the tracks towards its certification within a reasonable timeframe.

 INTRODUCTION

Aviation, a mode of transport that brings continents and regions closer together and a major industrial sector, is also responsible for around 6% of anthropogenic global warming. Of this contribution, 4% is linked to CO 2 emissions and 2% to the formation of contrails and nitrogen oxides. Faced with the challenges of decarbonization, which is absolutely essential for transport in general and aviation in particular, several avenues are open. We could imagine drastically reducing traffic, but it is clear that demand is constantly increasing. We could also imagine continuing to use kerosene, but producing it from bio-sources. This solution partially solves the problem, but cannot be considered sustainable for several reasons: on the one hand, the resources required for production are limited (fresh water, biological nutrients), and on the other hand, because the combustion of bio-based kerosene continues to produce CO 2 in the upper atmosphere, where it has the greatest greenhouse effect.  .
