Overview
ABSTRACT
This article is a comparison of level measurement and detection methods. It consists of 3 chapters, each describing a category of methods: those common to liquids and bulk solids, those intended for liquids, and finally the methods specific to solids. For each method, qualitative and quantitative criteria make it possible to assess the suitability of the method with regard to metrological performance, the influence of the characteristics of the medium, interface detection, accessibility, explosion protection, type of output signal, and price level. Finally, the last column gives additional indications relating to specificities.

INTRODUCTION
Nothing seems more trivial than level measurement! Alongside temperature, pressure and flow measurements, it's one of the four fundamental measurements assumed by industrial instrumentation. However, the multiplication of methods employed demonstrates that level is, in reality, a more complicated parameter to master at first glance. Its complexity stems from the diversity of conditions of use, the physico-chemical properties of the products to be measured, and safety and, where applicable, legislative constraints (legal metrology for commercial transactions). Level measurement is used in automation management (process engineering), monitoring (water management, alarm triggering) and analysis of physico-chemical data during measurement campaigns. These tables are intended as guides to help the user select the most appropriate method(s) for each particular case.
