2. Make the team aware of the situation

2.1 Get the facts about the current malaise

When project teams fail, they tend to talk in similar terms. There is denial, complaining and resignation. It is therefore possible to identify these elements in the teams' discourse during a meeting by writing the words and phrases on a board. In this way, the project manager enables team members to become aware of their situation.

The following questions can accompany this first step:

  • what's difficult for you at the moment?

  • what's going on that's not fair to your efforts?

  • when did you start to give up?

  • what exactly is going on?
