4. Numerical nomenclature

An overhaul of the nomenclature began in 1992. This led to the replacement of alphabetical classification by numerical classification. The classification is based on two main parts: a first part devoted to "dangerous substances and preparations" (1000 headings) and a second part devoted to activities (2000 headings).

Within these two main sections, installations are grouped into broad categories.
