 INTRODUCTION

For 200 years, the nomenclature of classified installations has been constantly evolving, mainly as a result of the transposition of EU legislation, accidentology and developments in available techniques. Today, the nomenclature is set out in a decree issued by the Conseil d'Etat (the French State Council), after consulting the Conseil Supérieur de la Prévention des Risques Technologiques (the French High Council for Technological Risk Prevention).
