1. Bonded joint design
Initially, the aim was to replace a weld or rivet line with a glue line, but epoxy adhesives, the most commonly used for metal bonding, do not resist peeling or cleavage well, so it was soon realized that bonded parts had to be specially designed (cf. ).
In particular, the parts must work in shear, and the stresses must be distributed over a larger area, as shown in figure 1 .
