3. Surface treatments before bonding

The surface of metals is covered with several layers of products that are unfavorable to bonding (figure 19 ).

  • The aims of surface treatment are as follows:

    • remove dirt, contamination, oils and lubricants from rolling and drawing processes;

    • remove adsorbed layers (water, etc.) ;

    • remove more or less fragile layers (natural oxides, hydrated oxides) until the metal is bare and perfectly clean;

    • make sure the adhesive wets the surface well (see [BM 7 615] );

    • increase surface roughness...
