 INTRODUCTION

Assessing employee exposure to chemical substances requires some general knowledge.

While remaining succinct, this fact sheet will provide you with summary information on :

  • the routes by which toxic substances penetrate the body, and their relationship with workplace metrology;

  • the different types of measurement and their suitability for measuring operator exposure at the workstation;

  • the types of measures to be implemented, depending on the objective you are pursuing;

  • the last point deals with the issue of exposure variability, which is characteristic of risk assessment, and is a key to understanding it (see Ambient measurements: who to entrust them to and how often [FIC 0109] and Interpreting and communicating measurement results [FIC 0110] ).
